Why Synthetic Shoes Cause Problems in Spring – A Podiatrist’s Material Advice

The chunky winter boots go back in the wardrobe, and ballerinas, trainers and the first sandals finally come out again. It’s exactly at this point in the season that podiatry clinics see a spike in the same complaints: burning soles, itching between the toes and cracked skin. A podiatrist explains which material you should avoid consistently in spring - and which alternatives genuinely do your feet good.

Why synthetic shoes become a problem in spring

At first glance, they seem like the sensible option: lightweight ballerinas made from man-made materials, budget trainers in “faux leather”, fashionable sandals with a glossy finish. The price looks tempting and they look the part - but your feet often end up paying for it later.

The key issue is breathability - or rather the lack of it. Our feet contain thousands of sweat glands and release moisture throughout the day. When the upper or lining is synthetic, that moisture has nowhere to go. It builds up, socks become damp, and the skin swells and softens.

A permanently damp environment like this is the perfect breeding ground for germs:

  • Athlete’s foot often starts between the toes and then spreads to the sole.
  • Bacteria break down sweat and dead skin, which leads to strong odours.
  • The skin softens, becomes cracked and is more vulnerable to small injuries.

There’s another downside too: synthetics hold on to heat. As spring temperatures rise, the inside of the shoe warms up. Feet can swell slightly, there’s less room, and friction increases against stiff edges or seams.

Blisters, pressure points, odour: typical consequences of synthetic materials

At this time of year, many patients report sudden blisters - particularly on the heel, toes and along the outer edge of the foot. From a podiatry perspective, that pattern is unsurprising.

What exactly happens inside the shoe?

Several factors combine and make each other worse:

  • Rising temperatures: swollen feet push harder against the material, increasing pressure.
  • Bacterial growth: blisters can become inflamed and wounds may heal more slowly.

That familiar “shoe smell” after a day in synthetic ballerinas or trainers isn’t caused by sweat itself. It comes from bacteria breaking sweat down. In a warm, damp and poorly ventilated shoe, they multiply quickly. The material then absorbs the odour - and many synthetics are difficult to fully deodorise again.

These materials are much kinder to feet in spring

If you want to keep your feet healthy over the long term, it pays to check material details carefully when buying spring footwear. For years, podiatry has favoured natural, breathable fabrics.

Genuine leather: a classic with strong benefits

High-quality real leather remains a top choice for many types of shoes.

  • Breathable: natural pores allow air to circulate.
  • Moisture management: leather absorbs sweat and releases it again.
  • Flexible fit: it gives slightly over time and moulds to the foot.

For spring, soft smooth leather or fine suede are especially suitable. They help maintain a drier in-shoe climate and reduce rubbing because they ease with wear instead of creating hard pressure points.

Suede and nubuck: gentle on skin, well ventilated

Suede (velour leather) stands out for its soft, lightly brushed surface. Air can circulate well, and sweat is absorbed to an extent without staying trapped in the material. That makes it ideal for low shoes, loafers or lightweight ankle boots during the in-between season.

Nubuck sits somewhere between smooth leather and suede in texture. It tends to look more polished than pure suede, while still offering good breathability. Many brands use nubuck for trainers or city shoes - a far healthier option than fully synthetic “faux leather” models.

Natural-fibre textiles: cotton, linen and more

For lightweight trainers, espadrilles or summer shoes, uppers made from cotton or linen work very well. Both let air through, feel comfortable in warmer weather and dry relatively quickly.

In everyday life, these materials are also practical: they’re light, flexible and usually easy to pair with insoles that further improve the in-shoe climate.

Raffia and natural fibres for sandals

With open shoes, many people underestimate how much the material still matters because “air gets in anyway”. In reality, straps and footbeds are crucial. Natural fibres such as raffia can make sandals feel noticeably better.

Many shoes look like leather at first glance but are largely made from plastic. In a shop, the only reliable way to be sure is to read the label carefully.

If you’re already prone to sweaty feet, fungal infections or blisters, a few simple habits can help in spring:

  • Plan for at least one pair of high-quality leather shoes for day-to-day wear.
  • Choose open shoes with natural fibres or a leather footbed.
  • Wear socks made from cotton or merino wool, not purely synthetic fibres.
  • Rotate shoes daily so they can dry out properly.
  • React early if you notice itching or redness between the toes.

If you spend a lot of time standing or walking, you usually notice the difference quickly: natural materials cause fewer pressure points, feet feel less “puffed up” by evening, and odour tends to stay much milder.

When synthetic shoes can still have a place

Despite the warnings, synthetic footwear doesn’t have to go straight in the bin. For short trips, the occasional party or as a spare pair kept at the office, synthetic styles can be fine - as long as you’re not in them all day.

Sports trainers with specialist high-tech materials are a separate case. Many brands still rely on plastics here, but combine them with well-designed ventilation, moisture-wicking insoles and mesh structures. Even then, it’s worth keeping an eye on your feet: do they stay healthy over time, or do skin problems start cropping up more often?

Choosing shoes thoughtfully doesn’t just reduce trips to the doctor - it also saves a lot of day-to-day frustration. Light, comfortable spring shoes made from natural materials don’t only feel better; they actively support the health of the feet that carry our entire body every day.
